About Spider Wasps

Spider wasps are solitary wasps that hunt spiders. A female finds a spider, paralyses it with a sting and drags it to a burrow, crevice or mud cell, where she lays an egg on it. Adults feed on nectar. They run and flick their wings along the ground while searching, which makes them easy to spot.

What Spider Wasps Look Like

Most have long legs, a slim dark body and orange, reddish or dark wings. Some species are large and eye-catching, while others are small and easily missed.

Nests and Life Cycle

Nests are simple. Some species dig a burrow, others use a crack or a mud cell, and each holds a single paralysed spider and one egg. There is no colony.

Is It a Problem at Your Property?

Spider wasps are useful in the garden and are not defending a nest. They can sting if picked up, so it is best to leave them alone. If you are unsure which wasp you have, contact us.

If wasps are nesting where they shouldn't be, we can help with wasp control services - contact us for an inspection and a clear written quote.
